MediaRoad session: how do we enhance European media innovation

16 September 2018, 14h00 – 15h00
IBC, EBU Stand 10.F20. – RAI Amsterdam

Currently, the European media sector finds itself in a convergent, multiplatform and globalized landscape offering a set of opportunities and challenges for media players to innovate from creative content production to technological innovation and R&D, and across the value chain.

The MediaRoad project aspires to reawaken a ‘start-up mentality’ in the media sector, reshaping the way organizations collaborate and deploy new ideas in the market. The European Broadcasting Union is leading a consortium in which some of Europe’s most prominent broadcasters (BBC, RAI, VRT, Association of European Radios) work alongside leading media research institutes (IRT, EPFL, IMEC) and independent producers (CEPI TV). Project partners work within three project Hubs and support the transformation of the European media sector by building an ecosystem for innovation.

A “sandbox” is a safe playground for children. In the context of the MediaRoad project, Sandboxes are media innovation accelerators in which ground-breaking ideas can be tested and scaled up. The MediaRoad Sandbox Hub sets up a European network of media innovation accelerators, which are hosted by established media organizations (currently at France Télévisions, Swedish Radio, YLE, and ARD), and encompass applications from entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs with media-related concepts involving technology, journalism, social media, and content. Each Sandbox operates independently and has its own specific theme, but is interlinked across Europe to share successes for broader implementation.

Are you interested in discovering some success stories from broadcasters and start-ups involved in MediaRoad?

During our MediaRoad session at IBC 2018, you will get a chance to learn more about our project and hear first-hand about how the Sandbox concept boosts innovation. One of our newly established Sandboxes will share their experiences with setting up a media innovation accelerator, and a start-up will present its story of scaling up in Europe thanks to the Sandbox Hub. Afterwards, we invite you to a conversation with our partners during a Q&A session.

Join our MediaRoad session at IBC 2018, Sunday 16 September, 14:00 – 15:00 at EBU stand location 10.F20.
